Cape Town - England manager Roy Hodgson has dismissed suggestions that Wayne Rooney should not go to the 2016 European Championships, insisting the side's captain will be at the tournament, provided his is fit.

England's all-time leading goalscorer has missed Manchester United's last six matches after picking up a knee injury, but had been the subject of much critisicm prior to that, having scored just seven times in the Premier League this season.

"Yes I can [say Rooney will be there if fit], because he is our captain, he is our most experienced player," Hodgson told talkSPORT.

"He's not missed one squad of the last eight squads. He has never let us down.

"I'm not prepared to say categorically about any players at this stage that they will go but I certainly will dismiss any discussions about Wayne Rooney and whether or not he should go.

"My only fear is that he won't recover in time from his injury, but it's a minor fear."

Euro 2016, hosted in France, kicks off on 10 June. England will compete in group B alongside Russia, Wales and Slovakia.
