Hodgson criticises fringe Palace players

Cape Town - Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson criticised his second-string players after their 4-1 defeat to Bristol City in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.

The Eagles boss opted to make 10 changes to the team that played in the 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United last weekend, to give his fringe players an opportunity while resting the regular starters.

However, the new-look team flattered to deceive against their Championship opposition and Hodgson made no bones about how disappointed he was with their performance.

"I took a risk - I take responsibility for that," he said, as quoted by the Daily Mail

"We've had a couple of tough Premier League games and played quite well in both of them, in my opinion.

"I was anxious we rested those players, and I was also very anxious to see some players because a lot of those players out there I've not had any chance to watch in so-called first-team action.

"It was an opportunity for them to knock on the door of the first team and threaten the places of the team I have played in the last two games, so I am bitterly disappointed that didn't work out because there were very few performances that made me think I was picking the wrong team."

Palace next welcome fellow strugglers West Ham United to Selhurst Park in an English Premiership clash on Saturday.

Kick off is at 16:00.
