Cape Town - England striker Wayne Rooney has hit back as criticism directed at him by Paul Scholes, claiming he is uninterested in the opinions of outsiders.

Scholes, a former Manchester United midfielder turned coach, recently questioned Rooney's contributions to both the Three Lions and Red Devils, stating he felt the 28-year-old was already passed his prime.

However, Rooney, who ended a run of four internationals without a goal by scoring in the 2-2 draw against Ecuador in Miami on Wednesday, insists he is paying no mind to his former team-mate's opinions.

The striker said: "To be honest, I'm not really interested in what anyone else has got to say.

"I'm interested in what Roy Hodgson and the coaching staff here and the people around me say. People have their opinions but I don't agree with them.

"[Scholes has] been a team-mate but he's been away from the first team for a long time.

"I've seen a lot of you (in the media) saying he's coached me and been around the team but he hasn't. I'm not really going to react. I'm not interested. He's got his opinions so let's leave it at that."
