Real legend Betancort dies

Madrid - Antonio Betancort, former goalkeeper for Real Madrid, Las Palmas and Deportivo Coruna, has died aged 78, the Real association of veteran players said Sunday.

Betancort joined Real in 1961 from his local team Las Palmas.

He was loaned out to Deportivo for a season before returning to Madrid in 1963.

He was first-choice keeper for Los Merengues between 1963 and 1971 -helping them to win the European Cup in 1966 plus six Spanish league titles - before winding down his career back at Las Palmas.

Betancort played twice for Spain in 1965 and was a reserve at the 1966 World Cup finals.

There will be a minute's silence in his honour before Real's home game against Levante Sunday.
