Ethiopia to terminate coach's contract

Addis Abbaba - The Ethiopian Football Federation says it will terminate national team coach Mariano Barreto's contract at the end of the month.

The EFF says Barreto will leave by mutual agreement halfway through his two-year contract.

EFF spokesman Wondimkun Alayou says the Portuguese coach hasn't made enough progress with the team and "was not worth the amount of money that he is being paid."

He says Barreto is being paid $18,000 a month and will receive three months' salary as a severance payment.

Before Barreto took over, Ethiopia qualified for the 2013 African Cup of Nations and nearly made the 2014 World Cup. Under Baretto, it missed out on this year's African Cup, winning just one of six games in the main group stage in qualifying.

The federation hasn't named a replacement.
