Chile defender joins Mainz

MAINZ, Germany — Chile defender Gonzalo Jara has joined Bundesliga club Mainz on a free transfer from English Championship side Nottingham Forest.

Mainz said Wednesday that the 28-year-old Jara joined on a two-year contract, with an option for a further one-year extension.

Mainz managing director Christian Heidel praised Jara's "strong performances" at the World Cup, where he played in all of Chile's four games. He said that Jara is "a very experienced, versatile player who will give our team extra stability in defense."
