3 fined for racist comments

The Hague - Dutch prosecutors have fined three people for racist comments posted online last year in reaction to a selfie featuring nine members of the national team.

Midfielder Leroy Fer posted the picture, taken by Netherlands teammate Memphis Depay, on Instagram in November 2014.

It featured eight black players together with Karim Rekik, who has a Tunisian father, and drew a string of racist reactions when it was reposted on a soccer website's Facebook page.

Fer welcomed the €360 fines, calling them "a clear signal to everybody that this kind of thing can't happen. Not on the field or off it."

Netherlands captain Robin van Persie says "we all represent the Netherlands and color plays no role."

If the suspects do not pay the fine, they will be taken to court.
