1 dies, 11 hurt in fracas

Madrid - Officials said on Sunday that a man had been hospitalised in critical condition, 11 others suffered minor injuries and two were arrested after a fight broke out outside Atletico Madrid's football stadium between its fans and those of Deportivo La Coruna.

Madrid emergency service and police said the clash between the rival fans broke out near the Vicente Calderon stadium. One man with head injuries had to be rescued from the nearby Manzanares River.

The man, identified only as a 43-year-old Deportivo fan, was resuscitated and taken to Madrid's Clinico hospital.

Police said that they had made two arrests and were still investigating the incidents.

The 11 injured included a police officer who suffered a broken hand.

Atletico Madrid said in a statement it strongly condemned the incidents.
