Cape Town - Inter Milan have announced that they have sacked coach, Gian Piero Gasperini after only being in charge of the Italian champions for five matches.
A statement from Inter’s website read: “Inter announces that today's training session has been carried out by Daniele Bernazzani and Giuseppe Baresi.
“The club wishes to thank Gian Piero Gasperini for the effort shown during his tenure and manifests its true disappointment for the interruption of the relationship with the coach.”
Tuesday night’s 3-1 defeat away to Novara was the last straw for club president, Massimo Moratti.
At the time, Moratti said that he would rethink Gasperini’s role at the club overnight and make a decision by this morning, but already hinted at where his thoughts were headed to.
“When you lose in the manner that we did against Novara, there is nothing positive to take from that.
“Gasperini did not seem to be in control.”
In his response, Gasperini challenged his president to stand by his claims.
“Moratti has declared that I don't have the support of the players.
“The rapport with the group is optimum. If the problem is the coach, then it has an easy solution.
“If, instead, as I believe, the problem is another one, then we must resolve it through work.”
Inter have yet to announce who will replace Gasperini and he becomes the third coach to be sacked by Moratti in less than nine months after Jose Mourinho departed the club for Real Madrid and was replaced by former Liverpool boss, Rafael Benitez, who was subsequently sacked in December.
It is rumoured that former Chelsea managers, Carlo Ancelloti and Claudio Ranieri are favourite’s to succeed Gasperini, although others suggest former player, Luis Figo may assume the immediate role of mentoring the squad.
