Hodgson baffled by SWC snub

2010-12-03 13:57

London - Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson admits he can't understand why Russia were awarded the 2018 World Cup when England had made such a strong bid to stage the tournament.

The English bid won only two votes from the 22-man Fifa executive committee in Thursday's ballot in Zurich and was eliminated in the first round of voting.

Despite receiving praise for the strength of their technical bid as well as their bid presentation, England's wait for a first World Cup since 1966 will now extend to well over half a century.

Hodgson's team would have hosted World Cup matches at their famous Anfield stadium and he is adamant the infrastructure already in place in English football would have made it a perfect World Cup host.

He said: "I am really disappointed. For me 1966 is such a long time ago and here in England we have so much going for us in terms of football.

"I think a World Cup (in England) would have been a rip-roaring success. We have the stadia, the passion of the fans and we have the quality of the infrastructure to accommodate people and get them from match to match.

"It seemed to be everything was crying out for England to be given to the World Cup and I was pretty confident when we started off that we would get it.

"Hearing it went to Russia and that we only got two votes is particularly disheartening."

England must just pick themselves up and stop been sore losers , Like that other guy on Sky Sports news last night .

I am very happy that England lost their bid to host the world cup especially after doing everything in their power to make sure that South Africa did not host the event. They ridiculed our country saying that people should wear bullet proof vests because of crime in this country but at the end they ate the humble pie.Big thanks to Mr. Blatter because he is sticking to his word that everry country will be afforded the opportunity to host this big event. To England what goes around comes around.

Jeepers but the English are sore losers. You had it in 1966, Russia (and Qatar) haven't had it yet. You have the Olympics in 2012 You have the Rugby World Cup in 2015 That's enough for now, let others have their go as well. And perhaps your media needs to take a look inwards a bit and think a little bit more on the timing of their releases

      Nivvy - 2010-12-04 09:51

Andrew thats a stupid statement to make. England have been hosting the Olympics, RWC but those are completely different tournaments organised by different people. The facts remain. England hosted the tournament in 66 and have never hosted it. They have all the best Stadiums, infastructure,Lets not forget they have the strongest league in the world. All top professionals want to or have plied their trade in England. If a country like England can't host the tournament for a second time then NO country should be able to host it. The fact that England last hosted the tournament 44 years ago is all the more reasonthat they should get it again, especially for what they do for world football. Russia need to build 8 stadiums to host the tournament, and it's one of the most expensive places to visit. Doesn't make sense. How can countries like France, Germany, Italy, Mexico ( although they took over from Yugoslavia) host the tournament or than once. England were very unlucky to miss out on hosting the tournament and it's understandable for them to feel hard done by for not getting it. Weren't we all angry at Charles Dempsey when he decided not to vote which saw Germany get the tournament in 2006 ( For a second time) an not us. The fact remains England have every structure in place to host the tournament.

      @ Nivvy: Well said.

What is so baffling about it? Yes you haven't hosted since 1966, but the other hosts have never hosted it before! Quit whinging you sorry bunch of poms.

  • JustinD - 2010-12-03 14:57

OMG what a crybaby, i think you should rather focus on un-baffling the kak soccer team you manage

  • Lunga - 2010-12-03 15:07

They really did have the strongest bid. How unfortunate.

      pointblankza - 2010-12-03 15:32

No Lunga, let the other countries also host it. They have the Rugby World Cup AND the Olympics... that is enough.

I'm a Dutchman, and would have loved to see Holland / Belgium get it. It was not to be, so I'm pleased Russia got the nod above England. I'm sure the Russians will do a good job. Open the vodka!

    what doesn't baffle Woy?

  • BardofAvon - 2010-12-03 17:03

England and the US (and others) must get together and start their own SWC. Fifa is patently corrupt.

  • Don.Tandy - 2010-12-03 17:53

Hey guys, stop being so naive. Just bear in mind that FIFA have just spent a lot of time in Africa, and have learnt how to do the african salute.

  • spinprint1 - 2010-12-04 11:03

Typical responses by the uneducated soccer fans in South Africa. They say SA is a soccer mad country. Have they seen the crowds in the stadiums. I have seen more spectators in a brothel and a lot more action as well.
