Gerrard salvages England win

Wembley - Captain Steven Gerrard rescued England from a post-World Cup embarrassment against Hungary, scoring twice in five minutes to salvage a 2-1 victory in a friendly on Wednesday.

England were booed from the start by fans venting their anger at the team's second-round World Cup exit.

The jeers only increased when the team fell behind in the 63rd minute.

Phil Jagielka, though, was wrongly adjudged to have turned the ball into his own net. The ball appeared to have failed to cross the line, reviving memories of Frank Lampard's disallowed goal in the 4-1 loss to Germany in June.

But Gerrard blasted in an equaliser six minutes later from 25m and then danced round three defenders to hit a match-winning second in the 73rd.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
