Fani: PSL strikers lack hunger

Johannesburg - Footballing legend Fani Madida feels the modern day PSL striker lacks the hunger needed to become truly prolific in front of goal.

The 45-year-old knows all about finding the back of the net in the Premiership, with the former Kaizer Chiefs hitman still the record holder for most goals scored in a single season with 34.

Mamelodi Sundowns forward Katlego Mphela currently tops the PSL's goal scoring charts this term with nine after 15 league matches, but Madida feels the top scorer's tally at this point of the season should be significantly higher.

"The reason we have a problem with strikers in South Africa is because strikers are no longer hungry enough to score," he told the PSL's official website.

"There is no need for them to get too involved. Look at players like Ronaldo, the Brazilian, look at Romario, great strikers; they never wanted to be too busy, but today's strikers want to be overly involved. It's totally unnecessary."

Madida, currently assistant coach at AmaZulu, believes the talent is clearly evident in the players, but that it needs to be harnessed by the clubs' coaches and technical staff.

"There is no doubt we have the talent in this country. But we need to teach them about killer-instinct, which is missing for me," he added.

"There has been some really good goal poachers in the years gone by, not great players, but players who knew where the back of the net was."
