Cape Town - Louis van Gaal received a lukewarm response when he addressed the Old Trafford faithful following the conclusion of Manchester United's season, and Red Devils fans are likely to be less than enamoured with comments the Dutchman made later to the press.
Goals from Wayne Rooney, Marcus Rashford and Ashley Young helped United claim a 3-1 win over Bournemouth to end their season on a winning note, but it was something of a hollow victory after they lost out on fourth spot and a place in the Champions League to cross-town rivals Manchester City.
Many United supporters, some who booed their manager on Tuesday night, have called for Van Gaal to go after a second under-whelming season, but the former Barcelona boss has said that the fans' expectations of the team are not realistic.
"Of course [I understand the boos], because I have also said that the expectation is very high, especially the fans," he told Sky Sports.
"They are expecting a lot. But I think these expectations are much too high, and we are a team in transition, and that I have said when I started here.
"Maybe I have to bring over the message much clearer than I have done."
Addressing questions on his future, Van Gaal remains resolute that he will not be going anywhere, asserting that he will be in Manchester next season "because I have signed a three-year contract."
He added to the BBC: "We didn't reach our aim. We have to qualify for the Champions League. We have still the FA Cup final to go. Everyone has to make up his mind at how we have done this season at that time.
"I can only say I have a contract of three years and I want to fulfill that. The transition period is not over yet. I am still the manager."
United still have the chance to claim some silverware, as they face Crystal Palace in Saturday's FA Cup final.
