Sunderland sign free agent Anichebe

London - Sunderland manager David Moyes was reunited with Victor Anichebe on Friday after signing the former Everton striker on a free transfer.

Anichebe had been looking for a new club since being released by West Bromwich Albion at the end of last season and Moyes has brought in the 28-year-old Nigerian after losing Fabio Borini to injury.

Borini's groin problem left Moyes with Jermain Defoe as the only senior striker in his squad.

Anichebe was a youth-team player at Everton under Moyes and went on to make more than 130 appearances for the Toffees before joining West Brom.

Anichebe joins youngsters Duncan Watmore and Joel Asoro, who is just 17, as the primary back-ups for former Tottenham star Defoe.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
