Shilton: Pickford is worth the price tag

Cape Town - England legend Peter Shilton believes the £30m fee Everton have agreed to pay Sunderland for the services of goalkeeper Jordan Pickford is worth it.

Pickford is on the brink of becoming Everton's record signing, but Shilton, who was the world's most expensive goalkeeper when he joined Stoke City from Leicester City in a £325,000 transfer in 1974, believes it's money well spent.

"This sort of money should be spent on goalkeepers," Shilton told BBC Radio 5 live.

"For someone like Jordan, who is young and has great potential, it does not seem a great fee.

"In the big scheme of things it is not a lot of money, considering how important the goalkeeping position is.

"It is second to a striker who scores 20 goals a season. You cannot have a really good side without a good goalkeeper."

Pickford made 135 saves in 29 appearances for Sunderland last season, but the Black Cats were relegated nonetheless.
