Senderos released by Aston Villa

London - Former Arsenal defender and Swiss International Philippe Senderos has been released by English Premier League club Aston Villa.

The 30-year-old centre-back played just nine times for rock-bottom Villa, after joining from Valencia in June 2014.

"Aston Villa and Philippe Senderos have mutually agreed to terminate the defender's contract," Villa said on their club website.

"The club wishes Philippe all the best in his future career."

Senderos played at both the 2006 and 2014 World Cups and at Euro 2008 for Switzerland, with whom he won over 50 caps.

His last international appearance came out at the World Cup in Brazil in 2014 in Switzerland's 5-2 drubbing by France.

Senderos also won the 2004 English Premier League with Arsenal, and was on the bench two years later as Arsenal went down 2-1 to Barcelona in the Champions league final.
