Manchester - Beijing Guoan chairman Luo Ning has revealed that the Chinese Super League club attempted to acquire the services of Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney.

Luo revealed that the bid was made at the beginning of the season, but Rooney rejected it as he wanted to stay at Old Trafford.

Rooney has been linked with a move away from United recently after falling down the pecking order. As of now, China and the United States have emerged as potential destinations should he decide to leave the Red Devils.

"We indeed made an approach for Rooney at the beginning of the season but he's informed us that he wants to stay in Manchester United," Luo told Beijing sports broadcasting program Sports Night Talks.

"Rooney says he'll keep playing in the Premier League as long as his health allows. We even met with his agent (Paul Stratford)."

Beijing Guoan is not the first Chinese Super League club Rooney has been linked to as Shanghai SIPG were also reportedly interested in signing the 31-year-old. Shanghai has since sacked manager Sven-Goran Eriksson and replaced him with Andre-Villas Boas.

Rooney has been the target man for criticism this season with many experts and fans questioning his form and continued role as captain for both Manchester United and England, which was followed by Jose Mourinho dropping him from the starting 11 recently.
