Cape Town - Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney admitted the side just weren't good enough against Sunderland on Saturday after slumping to a 2-1 defeat at the Stadium of Light.

Wahbi Khazri and Lamine Kone both scored for the Black Cats either side of Anthony Martial's temporary equaliser, leaving the Red Devils six points off the pace of the top-four.

And, speaking after the loss on Wearside, a clearly dejected Rooney told his club's official website: "We didn't create enough chances, we weren't aggressive enough and it has cost us not defending set pieces so it's a disappointing result.

"We didn't play well today, we know that, we didn't win enough second balls and all that coming together has cost us and it is not good enough."
