Phelan: Tigers need to invest

Cape Town - Hull caretaker manager Mike Phelan says the club are in dire need of investment if they are to compete in the Premier League this season.

The Tigers surprisingly beat defending champions Leicester City 2-1 in the opening day of the new campaign, but Phelan is under no illusions as to what is required if they are to avoid an immediate return to the Championship following their promotion in May.

Steve Bruce quit as a result of the club's apparent unwillingness to sign new players, with Phelan left with just 13 first-team members ahead of Saturday's win.

Jonathan Edwards (free, Peterborough) and Will Mannion (free, AFC Wimbledon) remain the Tigers' only signings thus far.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live's Sportsweek, Phelan said: "There has to be new players coming into a football club. The club won't be able to sustain a push in the Premier League without the influx of new players.

"Everyone is doing it and Hull City are a little bit behind in bringing new players. Everything boils down to whatever stage the owners are at with the sale of the club but movement has to be made quickly.

"It's not too long to go now before the transfer deadline. It's important we get some answers."

Reflecting on the Foxes victory, Phelan added: "We were the underdogs and everybody was tipping us to lose the game but when that happens there is something about this squad that makes us dig deep.

"We stick together as a unit - we don't let what people are saying about us affect us.

"We wanted to show what got us to the Premier League in the first place - hard work and determination - because that is what this squad is built on. We rolled our sleeves up and we were ready for a battle."
