Klopp wants Gerrard to succeed him at Liverpool

Cape Town - Jurgen Klopp wants Steven Gerrard to succeed him as Liverpool manager when he eventually leaves Anfield.

Gerrard will take charge of Liverpool Under-18s next season after starting a coaching job at his boyhood club in February, following the end of his playing career.

Klopp has no plans to leave Liverpool any time soon, with his current contract on Merseyside due to expire in 2022.

But the German already has half an eye on the future after admitting he’d love to see Gerrard follow him into the dugout.

“I told him when I leave, or the club sack me, I don’t care of course who’ll be my successor, but I’d love that he’d be it,” Klopp told The Times.

“I’ll do everything I can to make sure he gets all the information he needs. Because when you join a club, you have a big responsibility for the future, and the future of this club needs legends like Steven Gerrard in decisive positions.

“It’s perfect that we can involve Steven. What a guy, he’s fantastic."

Liverpool will be hoping to clinch a Champions League place with a win when they welcome already relegated Middlesbrough to Anfield on Sunday.

Kick off is at 16:00.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
