Defence remains Ndidi's first priority

Cape Town - Leicester City's Nigerian international midfielder Wilfred Ndidi was thrilled to score against Stoke, but says defence remains his main focus.

Ndidi scored the opening goal in a 2-0 win over the Potters on Saturday when he powered a stunner into the top corner on 25 minutes.

The result saw the Foxes move six points clear of the relegation places following their fourth consecutive win.

Since arriving from Belgium club KRC Genk at the start of the year, Ndidi has become increasingly important for the English champions and has participated in 13 matches in league and cup.

Saturday's goal against Stoke was his first in the Premiership and added to the FA Cup goal he netted against Derby County.

While delighted to contribute up front, the holding midfielder says keeping the opposition away from his own goal will always be his priority.

"Firstly, I'm happy to help the team win. We are trying to turn a difficult corner after a not-too impressive start to the season so every effort must count and we all try to give our best. Winning as a team is the ultimate," he told Completesportsnigeria.

"My first job is to prevent the opposition from scoring. Once I've been able to do that, I can then push forward to help the attack.

"That's always been a part of my game and that's why I'm always in the opponents box when we have set pieces but I'm not under any pressure to score goals.

"This was good and fulfilling and I hope to get as many more as possible to help my team," added the 20-year-old Lagos-born former Nath Boys Academy product.

Leicester play Sunderland at home and Everton away before facing Atletico Madrid in a Champions League quarter-final clash in Spain next week.
