Benitez wants to compete for silverware

Cape Town - Rafael Benitez says he will ensure his Newcastle side are competitive as they prepare for a return to the Premier League.

The 57-year-old former Valencia, Liverpool, Inter, Chelsea (interim), Napoli and Real Madrid boss guided the Magpies to the English top-flight after just one season in the Championship.

They finished top of the pile ahead of Brighton and Hove Albion with 29 wins from 46 games.

And now as he gears up for what is expected to be a highly competitive season, Benitez says with a "strong team" his side can challenge for honours.

Newcastle owner Mike Ashley is expected to fund a number of off-season signings, with Benitez telling the Daily Mail: "When I start something I put all my passion into it.

"I will try to do my best and hopefully everything will be fine.

"Things will be done in the right way and we can build what we want to build, a  and a strong club that can compete in the Premier League for everything.

"When I say everything, I don't say the title, but why not? Everything means we have to be consistent. If you have the FA Cup, you can be there. It is not Rafa saying he wants to win the league, no. I want to be competitive and after we can win a trophy or you can win the league.

"You never know. It will be more difficult with every year, but for sure, you have to try."
