Cape Town - Rafa Benitez will remain in charge of Newcastle next season after being promised a sizable war chest by owner Mike Ashley.
The former Liverpool boss invested in players in the off-season, but a
lack of activity in January led Benitez to question his future at the
However, after securing promotion and the Championship title, Ashley
has now pledged to invest heavily in the 57-year-old and his team ahead
of their return to the Premier League.
Following a meeting between Ashley, managing director Lee Charnley,
and Benitez, Ashley told the club's official website: "I’ve confirmed to
Rafa and Lee that they can have every last penny that the club
generates through promotion, player sales and other means in order to
build for next season.”
A delighted Benitez added: “I’m pleased with how the meeting went and
the positive approach we are all taking together to build on what we
have started this season.
“There will be challenges ahead of course, the summer will not be
easy, but the hard work has been going on for some time and we can now
continue positively with the development of the squad ahead of the start
of the new season.
