Afobe considers DRC allegiance

Cape Town - Bournemouth striker Benik Afobe is considering playing international football for the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Afobe is eligible to represent the African country through the origin of his parents, who fled the DRC during the late '80s to escape the civil war.

The 23-year-old captained the England U-12 side and represented them through all the age groups till the U21 side and was tipped to be a future star for the Three Lions.

However, as he hasn't yet represented the senior team in a competitive international fixture, he's still able to pledge his allegiance to the Leopards.

The former Arsenal striker admitted in an interview with Sky Sports that the DRC national team is interested in him, after scoring 32 goals in all competitions last season for Wolverhampton and MK Dons respectively.

"We'll see what happens in the next international break but I know Congo are interested in me and it's something my family, my agent and myself are going to sit down and talk about.

"You know once you've played the international game that isn't a friendly, that's you done, you get to choose once and you have to live with it.

"But, hopefully, I will choose well with my family and I won't regret anything."
