Sunderland - Wigan moved off the foot of the English Premiership with a gritty come-from-behind 2-1 win at Sunderland's Stadium Of Light on Saturday with Argentina striker Franco Di Santo grabbing the injury time winner.

Sunderland took a deserved eighth minute lead when Swedish midfielder Sebastian Larsson, back from suspension, pounced on a failed clearance by Keiran Richardson after Wigan goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi spilled a shot from Nicklas Bendtner.

Just after the half hour Al-Habsi saved Wigan from falling further behind when he turned away John O'Shea's flick from Larsson's curling free-kick.

On 41 minutes Phil Bardsley should have done better when Richardson found him in plenty of space but he miscued his shot with the ball sailing over the bar.

Against the run of play Wigan were back on level terms one minute from the interval after Jordi Gomez converted a side-footed penalty awarded when Nigerian-born striker Victor Moses was brought down chasing the ball in the box with Larsson.

This was only Wigan's third away goal of the season.

Their fourth came in the third minute of injury time when Di Santo tapped in James McCarthy's cross into an open net for what could prove a priceless goal.

This was only Wigan's second win of the campaign and it moved them on to nine points, two points above bottom of the table Blackburn.

Sunderland stagnate on 11 points, two above the drop zone.
