West Ham sign Wigan's Diame

London - Senegal midfielder Mohamed Diame has agreed to join English Premier League new-boys West Ham on a free transfer from Wigan.

Diame has signed a three-year deal with the east London club, who were promoted via last season's Championship playoffs, and will officially complete his move on July 1 after the expiry of his contract with the Latics.

"I'm very happy and very excited to have joined the club and I'm looking forward to the start of the season," Diame told West Ham's website.

"I know the fans here get behind the team all the time and I'm looking forward to showing everybody what I can do on the pitch."

Diame, who joined Wigan in 2009 and has 12 caps for Senegal, is West Ham manager Sam Allardyce's third new signing, following the arrivals of Stephen Henderson and Jussi Jaaskelainen at Upton Park.

"His potential is really good and he's ready to go and compete in the first team straight away as he's had three years in the Premier League already," Allardyce said.

"He's 25 and can only get better and I hope he can go on to prove that to me and all of the West Ham United fans. He will be a very exciting addition to the squad."

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
