'We need top class players'

London - Injured Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has called on the club's American owners to improve the struggling team by bringing in top quality players.

His plea to owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett follows a humiliating home defeat by Championship (second division) side Reading in an FA Cup third round replay on Wednesday.

Torres is out of action for six weeks after tearing knee cartilage in that match, while captain Steven Gerrard and fellow midfielder Yossi Benayoun also picked up injuries.

"It's now the owners' turn. They have to sign players so that this does not happen again," Spaniard Torres was quoted as saying by British media on Friday.

"If we want to compete with (Manchester) United and Chelsea we need a much, much more complete squad. We need more genuinely first-class players and we can't let our best players leave."

"It's frustrating," added the Spain striker.

"We finished second last season; this season should have been a turning point for us -- the chance for us to do something great. Manchester United sold Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo, while Chelsea didn't sign anyone. But it hasn't been."

Rafa Benitez's Liverpool are seventh in the Premier League with 33 points from 20 games, 12 adrift of leaders Chelsea and five behind Manchester City in fourth spot -- the final Champions League qualifying position.

Liverpool start their bid to win the Europa League, the club's last realistic chance of silverware this season, against Romanian outfit Unirea Urziceni on Feb. 18 having failed to progress beyond this season's Champions League group stages.

"We didn't want to win the Europa League at the start of the season but it's a reality now. Now we have to win it," said Torres said in The Guardian newspaper.

"Anything less than winning the tournament would be terrible. If we do not win it then we have to say it's been a very, very, very bad season in Europe."

"We need to improve, to take responsibility and to get into the top four and win something. We have virtually no chance of winning the title now. Now we need to make the best of this situation."

I agree El Nino, our team is good, but our squad is weak ! I know Rafa is trying to build the squad going for the youth route (Ngog, Pacheco, Spearing, Nemeth, etc) & they are all promising for the future, but what happens when anyone from the team get's injured NOW ? We need EXPERIENCED, quality backup ! Stop having to buy questionable under 10 mil players who might not work out like Dossenna, Voronin, etc & spend a bit more & get some proper quality players. Rafa wanted David Silva in the summer - basically had him signed up - owners only give him enough $$ to get Kyriakos - now really !

what you need is a top class manager. if you really want top class players you had better change teams.ex gerrard there is not a player in your side capable of being in a top 4 team

by the way, i'm guessing he is talking about guy's like Crouch & Alonso ?

  • Big K - 2010-01-15 10:09

I think what he is trying to say is that if they dont sign some classy players den he'll be leaving for Barca or Real in the summer!!!

As much as Torres is telling the truth,it doesn't sound nice on the side of his team mates. They'll be wondering who's not quality and might divide the team into groups. I think Benitez has run out of ideas and must be fired.

Bottom-line is that Liverpool are not the the team of old. According to stats, Liverpool have spent close to 125 Million on bringing new talent to the club over the last 3 season, this is the 5th highest expenditure on transfers in Europe. The players that were brought in are under performing, the coach is totally mis-managing his players and there is little if any team spirit. The fact the Rafa is trying to go the youth route this season is a little too late, teams like Arsenal, who's total team worth is almost half that of Liverpool's are totally dominating teams which Liverpool have struggled against. Get rid of the manager and build a team instead of always relying on buying new players.

Rafa is reaping the rewards of signing players like Dossena, Voronin and that damn Lucas!!! Letting Alonsa leave and buying an injured player like Aquilani!!! Guus Hiddink please come to Anfield...

it is very frustrating to witness a team like Liverpool loosing to teams that i think are always a winning material for liverpool and still the open window is coming to an end without buying quality players. just two weeks ago i was talking to my friends telling them the very same thing Torres is saying, i told my friends that i will be very happy to see Benitez buying new players and realising all current squad accept for Torres, Benayoun, and Gerrard

alan, do you even watch footie ? Riena, Benayoun, Mascherano & ofcourse Torres would be wanted by any top 4 club. In EUROPE, not just England ! Then you have the other good player's, who are just not YET consistent enough, e.g. Johnson, Agger, Aurelio, Riera, Kuyt. Then you have young players who do have potential, but we are not yet sure which way it will go, e.g Insua & Babel. It's too early to judge Aquilani, but I believe he can be a star in the future. And a brilliant deal bringing in Maxi on a free - looks like we'll need him over the next 6 weeks ! Carra is a legend, but time is not on his side. I think what Torres is saying is that we need more experienced, consistent quality player's for when we have an injury crisis, like we have now, for the 2nd time this season !

I think Torres is missing the word "fit" in his request....

As a die-hard Pool supporter , the only thing I can say is that Rafa must take the blame - when the owners gave him money to go out into the transfer market he bought the worst players in the world and sold our best players . What happens if Gerrard and Torres are sidelined with injury for the rest of the season ? Why didn't Rafa let Benayoun who is easily a worl-class player , start every game ? We are well and truly screwed and it has been and inside job . Maybe Joel Santana can come coach Liverpool - he might get something out of Lucas .

  • Sammy - 2010-01-15 14:00

Torres come to Old Trafford!!!!!!!! The Theatre of Dreams!!!!. leave your Spanish connections behind to hand make that big leap to success!

  • TRUE Red - 2010-01-15 14:54

From Tony Pulis, Stoke City manager : "There was no Pepe Reina who is the best goalkeeper in the Premier League and no Javier Mascherano who is the best holding midfielder in the world. They were missing Glen Johnson and then Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres went off. You are talking about being without five of your best players. Take five top players out of any club in the world and see how they perform. Rafa has been very unfortunate with injuries this season. He's been unfortunate that even when those players have been playing they haven't been at 110 per cent like they were last year"

  • AL (MU) - 2010-01-15 16:21

GET RID OF BENITEZ!!!!!!!!! If you dont now, all your good players will leave.

  • Gerald Sakho - 2010-01-15 19:51

Thus the time for Hicks and Gillett to do something. Top quality players are needed at Liverpool in order to compete with the likes of Chelsea Man U and Man C. Banitez has got no selection to when Gerrard and Torres are injured, he needs their support. Gerald Sakho
