Vertonghen staying put - Poch

Cape Town - Tottenham Hotspur fans have been reassured by manager Mauricio Pochettino's stance on Jan Vertonghen.

talkSPORT report that Mauricio Pochettino will not be letting his star Belgium defenderJ an Vertonghen leave White Hart Lane.

"Jan is an important player for us and for me," said Pochettino.

"I know sometimes the players are affected by the rumours and comments.

"For me I don't read the speculation and he's a very good and key player for us."

Vertonghen's recent comments over his contract threw his future at the London club in doubt.

The Belgian defender said he will not be extending his current deal with the club but fortunately for Pochettino and the Spurs faithful, that deal only expires in four years time.

Vertonghen is now into his third season with Spurs, having signed from Ajax Amsterdam in 2012. The Belgian defender has been linked with a move to Arsenal and Manchester United in the recent transfer window.

Spurs turn their attention to Europa league action on Thursday when they face Asteras Tripolis.

On Sunday, Tottenham Hotspur face Newcastle United at White Hart Lane with both sides still searching for English Premiership momentum. The match kicks off at 15:30.
