Cape Town - Jan Vertonghen's Tottenham future is hanging in the balance but Manchester United are waiting in the wings to sign the experienced defender should he become available in January.
The Mirror report that Louis van Gaal could make a January move for Belgium international centre-back Jan Vertonghen.
Mauricio Pochettino has somewhat surprisingly overlooked Vertonghen's talents for much of the season and the Belgium defender could force through a move away from White Hart Lane.
Younes Kaboul and Federico Fazio have been preferred by Pochettino this season.
Vertonghen arrived in London from Ajax in 2012 and quickly become a first team regular until some tough times under Tim Sherwood last season.
Initial reports suggest Manchester United will have to pay £18 million to prise Verntonghen away from Spurs.
