United failed to land Gomes

Cape Town - Manchester United failed in a bid to sign Benfica star Andre Gomes after Valencia boss Peter Lim refused to sell the Portuguese sensation.

The Daily Express reports that Louis van Gaal's side failed in an attempt to bring Andre Gomes to England.

Peter Lim, the billionaire investment tycoon and owner of La Liga side Valencia, owns the economic rights to the player. Lim bought Gomes' ecomonic rights for £11.8 million in January and shortly afterwards loaned the player to Valencia.

Reports suggest Manchester United, as well as neighbours Manchester City, made a bid for midfielder but failed to persuade Lim to part with the player.
