Tottenham seal Pienaar deal

2011-01-18 07:49

Cape Town - Everton have agreed to a fee with Tottenham over the possible sale of South Africa midfielder Steven Pienaar, according to a BBC report.

Confirmation of the agreement comes only days after a bid for the 28-year-old was also accepted from Chelsea.

Pienaar, who was left out of Sunday's 2-2 draw with Liverpool, would now seem to have a straight choice between Spurs and their London rivals.

He is out of contract at the end of the season and Chelsea are believed to have offered £3m.

The former Ajax star joined Everton from Borussia Dortmund on loan in 2007 before completing a permanent transfer for £2m in 2008.

Pienaar was voted the club's player of the season last term but his form during this campaign has not been at the same level.

The Toffees have decided to cash in now to avoid losing him for nothing in the summer. He has previously rejected a new contract at Goodison Park.

Tottenham had been considering trying to sign Pienaar on a pre-contract agreement, which would have ensured he moved to White Hart Lane for free in the summer.

But Chelsea's decision to attempt to bolster their squad forced Spurs boss Harry Redknapp to bring his plans forward.

If Pienaar makes a move during the transfer window, he will be the second player to leave the club in January.

honestly this Chelsea/Tottenham thing is getting tired. Why not just leave the reporting until something is official.

      sqc - 2011-01-18 10:55

      Yebo boet spot on.

      Lionel - 2011-01-18 13:33

Can only agree. I wonder if punters are placing bets on whether it is Chelsea or Spurs. The type of football Spurs play will better suit Pienaar. At Chelsea he will also spend mor time on the bench and only game time he will get is coming on as a replacement or when imjuries hit the squad.

      Homer - 2011-01-18 13:42

Yes! and the headline say Tottenham secure Pienaar. Then they say Pienaar has a choice between Spurs and Chelsea. Which one is it?

      Albo - 2011-01-18 14:48

He`ll probably end up somewhere else as well. These reporters are really starting to scrape the barrell for stories. Remember not to long ago Wayne Rooney was going to move to like 10 different clubs.

  • Shevath.Metal - 2011-01-18 09:14

@ greamatter: If you think Pienaar is better than Modric and Van der Vaart and will get a place on the first team, then you are a moegie.

      Albo - 2011-01-18 14:45

      Add Bale to that!!

      African'shtr - 2011-01-19 09:27

he is far better than van der vaart, rember spurs needs someone behind strikers to distribute the ball and spurs lacks on that, which is thus why he needs a player like pienaar

  • Jamesons - 2011-01-18 09:21

    Sign for Oldham rather

This publicity shows that we nolonger produce players locally that are wanted by prominent clubs in Europe. The likes of Phil Masinga, Rhoo, Shoes Moshoeu, Quinton Fortune & Benni are some examples of such. We nolonger produce quality players as before and this needs to be looked into at all structures of football. We need our local football to raise stakes and not only salaries. First we should start competing in the CAF Champions League, where the best of african football resides, it is indicative of the amout of player from West & North Africa that get contracts and recognition in Europe. PSL, Mvela & all stakeholders please lets motivate our players to not just focus on domestic football but also continental football! The vision and mission should come from the football execiutives and senior officials of the beautiful game! Mtungwa.

The headline says "Tottenham seal Pienaar deal"..and yet he has not even decided yet!! How can Spurs have sealed the deal when Pienaar is still an Everton player and yet to decide? As a Spurs fan I wish we would hear nothing at all until it is finalised. The headlines are just sensationalistic and void of truth it would seem!

  • Kingkaizer - 2011-01-18 10:46

Ag The Times can't you wait until an official signing has been done and report about it, because no deal has been reached yet.

  • WhySAFA - 2011-01-18 11:01

SA soccer is dogged by corruption and racism - all non-black players have been forced to make a name for themselves in overseas leagues, because they are overlooked locally by racist selectors who only want black players in the national squad. The likes of Benni, Steven P, etc are only a few that never really featured in local psl squads like pirates and chiefs and swallows, because they were not black. We need to seriously adjust the racism that pervades SAFA, if we are ever to be proud of our natinal squad, because we know that most black players are not up to international levels.

      mafilo - 2011-01-18 11:42

benni and skillo are not black? hahahahaha...thats a joke. there are 16 teams competing in our local league en yet you only naming 3 teams from soweto - nigga you is a fool, skello played for AJAX of cape town[PSL] before going overseas. WHY does everything has to be about racy? what do you know about soccer any way?

  • LACER8 - 2011-01-18 11:18

Simple...Steven P in for Palacios...Good move going to Spurs...they looking to build a very competitive team...almost took out Manchester United on the weekend but for brilliant defending from Vidic...Welcome to Spurs Steven...Harry Redknapp will keep you grounded and you will have a great career...

  • Julz - 2011-01-18 11:22

    Utterly poor reporting!

  • Shevath.Metal - 2011-01-18 12:03

    @ Lacer8 : Palacios is a defensive midfielder

  • Homer - 2011-01-18 13:47

Pienaar will be used exclusively in the low profile matches and the Carling Cup. He will battle to compete for a midfield place. Too much thalen there already

  • Nettas - 2011-01-18 14:44

Gaan Chelsea toe hond!!! Leave small time clubs like Spurs, besides they have Bale in your position and Chelsea plays a diamand shape midfield which means you have better oppertunity of playing.

  • mxoxozi - 2011-01-18 17:59

Kickoff has confirmed that he has signed for 3 million pounds, chose Spurs. He has confirmed even the jersey number he's going to wear. And we just have to let the games begin and Good luck to him!!!!

  • Lazioforever - 2011-01-20 11:15
