Sponsors stick with Rooney

London - England and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has been backed by his sponsors after press allegations on Sunday that he had a relationship with a prostitute.

According to the SportBusiness website, Nike, Coca-Cola and EA Sports insisted the allegations were a "private matter".

"We have worked with Wayne for seven years and he continues to be a Nike athlete," a statement from Nike read.

"This is a private matter for Wayne and his family and we have no further comment to make at this time."

Nike also continued its relationship with golfer Tiger Woods after the media storm surrounding revelations about his private life surfaced earlier this year.?

"This is a private matter for Wayne Rooney and his family," said a Coca-Cola spokesperson.

EA Sports, which uses Rooney as the face of its FIFA computer game series, added: "This is a personal matter and we respect Wayne and his family's privacy. We have worked together for six years and Wayne continues to represent EA Sports."

Rooney is reported to earn in excess of £6 million every year in endorsements.
