Cape Town - Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge, who has scored 36 goals in 46 starts for the Reds, is expected to be handed a new contract by the Merseyside club.
The England international, whose presence has been sorely missed by the Reds after being sidelined through injury for the past couple of weeks, is said to be on the verge on signing a new five-year deal at Anfield.
According to the Mirror, Sturridge has agreed (in principle) a deal that could earn him around £40 million over the course of the contract.
The deal would see the 25-year-old earning around £150,000 a week, making him one of the highest paid players at the club just behind top earner captain Steven Gerrard.
Manager Brendan Rodgers may have secured Sturridge’s future at the club, but his focus is now on making sure the striker reaches full fitness and soon.
“I’m not sure Daniel will be fit for the weekend. At this moment he won’t be in the [England] squad and I am sure Roy [Hodgson] will confirm that tomorrow. For Dan now, the next two weeks are a case of getting up to speed to make sure he’s fit to play for us, which is the priority,” Rodgers said.
