Pellegrini coy on Lampard future

Cape Town - Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini has lauded the impact made by Frank Lampard, describing the midfielder as an "important player" for the team this season.

Lampard opened his City account in the 1-1 draw against former employers Chelsea last weekend, before netting a brace on Wednesday to help lead the English giants to the convincing 7-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday in the third round of the Capital One Cup.

There had been some doubt over the role the 36-year-old would play at the Etihad Stadium after joining the club on loan from new MLS franchise New York City FC, but following two impressive outings the former England international looks set to become an integral part of the team's setup.

"Frank is a very important player for every team. He’s very happy here," Pellegrini told Sky Sports.

"He’s doing his job, he’s scoring. I think that he’s an important player for us."

There have been suggestions Pellegrini could now look to extend Lampard's loan stay in Manchester, although the Chilean tactician remained coy when quizzed about such a possibility.

"We’ll see what happens in the future but the important thing now is to think about what we must do against Hull on Saturday," he said.
