One more season for Scholes

Manchester - Veteran midfielder Paul Scholes signed a one-year contract extension with Manchester United on Monday, manager Alex Ferguson revealed.

The 37-year-old came out of retirement in January and put in some excellent performances to earn himself another year at the only club he has played for and for whom he made his first-team debut in 1993.

"It has been done. He (Scholes) is staying," Ferguson told in-house television channel MUTV at the Manchester United end-of-season banquet.

Scholes's performances may even earn him an international recall from new England coach Roy Hodgson for EURO 2012, although he retired from international soccer after EURO 2004.

Ferguson, who is reportedly against the idea of Scholes being called up by Hodgson, believes he could get up to 30 games out of the midfielder next season.

"I am delighted," said Ferguson.

"He knew he had made a mistake (by retiring). He now realises if he plays 25 or 30 games next season, they will be of real quality.

"I think this will be Paul's last season. We know him very well. We have had him since he was a kid. We know how to use him."
