One match bans for Red Devils

2009-03-24 17:10

London - Manchester United duo Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes have received one-match bans for their red cards against Fulham last weekend.

Rooney was given a second yellow card for throwing the ball in anger towards referee Phil Dowd during the 2-0 defeat at Craven Cottage.

Scholes was sent off early on for handling the ball on the line.

Both men will miss United's next match, at home to Aston Villa, on April 5.

The FA is to write to Rooney to issue him with a formal warning after he punched the corner flag before leaving the pitch, but the England striker was not reported for his angry words towards Dowd following his send off.

"We have clarified with Phil Dowd that there was no abuse from the player after he was dismissed," an FA spokesperson was quoted as saying.

"In relation to the incident when he punched the corner flag, the referee did not see that and we have written to Wayne Rooney reminding him of his responsibilities."

United defender Nemanja Vidic is also suspended for the Villa game as he serves the second match of a two-game ban for his sending-off in the 4-1 defeat by Liverpool 10 days ago.

This is utter bullsh*t, if it was players of any other team in the premier league they would've been banned 3 matches. Now we all know why furgeson chews so much gum, could it be to get some strange taste out of his mouth

How convenient that Liverpool are so far behind United and suddenly United get 3 red cards in 2 games. What a coincidence, my gosh, how the defence must have slipped, the same defence that was a wall. Refs were bought in both games man. Pool, you can buy all the refs in the world you want to, it still wont buy you a Premiership. Go Red Devils, give Liverfools carrots.

I agree with Nash. Man United always get away with murder. Finally something is done about Wayne Rooney who i think should have been banned for more than one game. Other players would easily have been banned for 3 games or more, but refs and the FA are so scared of Fergie they always tread lightly.

Anon user @ 10.01 - Liverpool beat ManUre before their players seen reds. And yeah, we made Vidic the dirty player he is, Scholes a wannabe goalkeeper & Rooney a spoilt brat. Fact is they fear the Red tide from Merseyside ! Seems Slur Fergie is not paying the refs enough anymore - must be the credit crunch, hehe - as for your defence, now that teams are now longer afraid to attack the media darling's after Liverpool demolished them, it shows how overated they actually are ! They scraped results against Newscastle & Inter, but Liverpool have shown the way ! But once again, ManUre players get off lightly - seems Rafa was right, AGAIN !

Anonymous User ---> 3/25/2009 10:01 AM : I totally agree. It doesnt bake sense that we suddenly have the worst defence after having the best defence in England. Personally I think Rafa was holding out on his contract negotiations so that a clause could be built in which provides cash to buy refs in superior clashes. I have no doubt we will be buying the ref in the Chelsea QF, seems like the only way we will meet the best in the world in the finals.

I couldn't agree more with you Nash. For a moment I thought Rafa was loosing it when he made a brief comment about how FA treats Fergie and his squad with blatant favouritism in January. There it is for us all to see.. What more can we say? Shame on FA!!!!!!!!!!!

i am proudly a man u supporter...but i understand and enjoy the beautiful game of football...credit to Liverpool for the great games they have recently played and won..and the many many many games they have drawn...it would be all a waste should they not win any silverware again this season....so lets wait for the end instead of these hating, insignificant comments from people who make the game of football seem like a screaming match between two girls fighting for the same pair of shoes...these games are tiny battles...lets see who wins the war...the champions obviously have nothing to prove...Glory Glory man u...and to Liverpoolers...keep chasing our bums:) thank you

To all the scouser liverFOOL wanna-be pundits you are still 1 point behind united and united has a game in hand. In all fairness (as much as I hate saying this) liverFOOL deserves to win 08/09 EPL seeing that they the only one of the top 4 clubs that havent done so since its introduction in 1990 and the fact that they've done the double on united for the first time in 33years... all the best to you scousers for the final stretch and I hope for your sake gerrard and torres can see you through because after all they make liverFOOL the others just make up the numbers :)
