'Next Henry' a massive gamble - Thierry Henry

Cape Town - The player tipped to become "the next Thierry Henry" represents a risky acquisition for Manchester United, according to French international legend Thierry Henry.

Manchester Evening News report that Manchester United's latest signing Anthony Martial is a "massive gamble".

The Red Devils confirmed the widely expected signing of Martial on deadline day on Tuesday, in a deal worth a reported 49 million.

“He has pace, can he score a a lot of goals?" questioned Henry.

"I actually don’t know because he’s only played 52 games. It’s a weird one for me to say. It’s a massive gamble that you need to take nowadays because of the situation Man United have.

“We saw him at the Emirates last season playing with Monaco and causing trouble to the Arsenal defence, he has a bright future. But there’s always a question mark, whether he can perform."

The former Arsenal and Barcelona star highlighted the cause of Angel Di Maria - the club's record-signing who failed to return to the club for a second season - proving that no player is certain to shine in the cauldron of the Premier League.

“We saw it last season with Di Maria, an established, experienced player who couldn’t make it through the ranks at United."

The former Lyon youngster has played just 52 Ligue 1 games and scored 11 goals in his fledgling career.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
