New Spurs deal for Friedel

London - Tottenham's veteran goalkeeper Brad Friedel has signed a new one-year contract with the English Premiership club on Monday.

Friedel, 43, moved to White Hart Lane from Aston Villa on a free transfer in 2011 and has often been used as back-up for France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, making just one league appearance last season.

Although the United States international is mostly a reserve in the twilight of his career, Spurs are keen for Friedel to help promote the club in America in an ambassadorial role.

"Brad Friedel has put pen to paper on a new one-year contract with the club, which will also see him become a club ambassador with a particular focus on our work in his native United States," a Tottenham statement announced.

"Our goalkeeper's ambassadorial role will have a wide-ranging remit that will include greater involvement in our global coaching programme and engaging with our 30 supporters clubs from across North America as we continue to increase our global presence and bring our international fanbase closer to the club."

Friedel become Tottenham's oldest player in May 2012 when he started his team's English Premiership match at Bolton at 40 years, 350 days.

The record for the north London club was previously set by Jimmy Cantrell, who was a day younger than Friedel when he made his final appearance in 1923.

Friedel, who has been capped 82 times by the United States, has also played for Liverpool, Blackburn and Aston Villa during his 17-year spell in the English Premiership.
