Cape Town - Valencia want to bring Juan Mata back to the club where he made his name in a summer move worth around £20 million.

The 26-year-old midfielder received a rousing ovation from the Old Trafford crowd after starring in United's 3-0 win over Spurs on Sunday but has struggled for game time since mid-January and could be tempted to move back to Spain.

Mata started his first game for Manchester United since being substituted at half time against QPR on January 17.

The Spaniard had played just 40 minutes in six matches since that fixture after appearing to fall out of favour with Louis van Gaal.

The Mirror report that Valencia owner Peter Lim and president Amadeo Salvo flew into Manchester to ascertain Mata's interest in a return to La Liga.

Mata left Valencia in 2011 when he moved to Chelsea before David Moyes paid the Blues £37 million to bring the Spain star to Manchester United in 2014.

Mata may be retained in the starting lineup for Manchester United's next league game.

Liverpool host Manchester United on Sunday at Anfield. The match kicks off at 15:30.
