Macheda's dream United debut

2009-04-05 19:17

England - Manchester United's new teenage hero Federico Macheda said he had a "dream day" after coming off the bench to score an injury-time winner in the 3-2 triumph over Aston Villa here on Sunday.

The 17-year-old Italian's majestic turn and strike deep into stoppage time at Old Trafford returned champions United to the top of the Premier League table by a point from Liverpool and with a game in hand.

"I think this is the day of my dreams - to score a goal like that on my debut," Macheda told Sky Sports, having scored a hat-trick for the reserves against Newcastle on Monday.

United were without the suspended trio of Nemanja Vidic, Paul Scholes and Wayne Rooney while Dimitar Berbatov was injured.

But Macheda more than made up for their absence and United's club captain Gary Neville, back in the side after two months out with a groin injury, was suitably impressed.

"I'm just grateful to him really," Neville said. "In the first half we fell apart a bit defensively and I think I paid a little bit for not playing for a couple of months.

"But in the second half we played the right way - we never stopped, kept passing the ball and got stronger as the game went on.

"And the quality he (Macheda) has shown there for the finish at the end is unbelievable.

"It's a massive win for us," added Neville after seeing United score twice in the last 10 minutes with Cristiano Ronaldo making it 2-2 after he'd given the hosts an early lead.

"Today we got our our job done," said the England full-back, who'd seen Villa score through headers from John Carew and Gabriel Agbonlahor.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson did his best to keep Macheda's goal in perspective.

"I said 'well done'. It's important to keep his feet on the ground. He's going to get a lot of publicity over the next few days and he'll need to handle that," Ferguson said.

Asked if he was always prepared to gamble for a win during the match or merely aim for a draw after falling behind, Ferguson said: "Gamble. Winning is the name of the game at this club.

"We play the right way, we deserved our result today because we tried to win the match. Yes, we take risks but risks are a part of football.

"This club has been this way for a long, long time and I love the thrill of it myself. I love to see that adventure.

"Yes, we take 'terrible' risks and we don't defend properly. We didn't defend well today but there's always a goal threat from us, there's always a chance we'll win the match."

Ferguson said the winner of the Champions League quarter-final between Liverpool and Chelsea would pose the greatest threat to United's hopes of a successful title defence.

"I look at the league differently from a lot of people," said Ferguson.

"A lot of people are screaming Liverpool. We accept that challenge, it's fantastic, we are better in that situation.

"But, funnily enough I think the winner of the Liverpool-Chelsea European tie will be our biggest threat. So many times, it's become such an emotional fixture between the two clubs. Whoever wins it, it will be a big step forward for them."

This victory stopped the league rot for United after their defeat by Liverpool and shock loss to Fulham.

"We've had our blip," insisted Ferguson. "We had seven, eight players missing today, four or five of the very top team but you can see that these young players are prepared to go right to the very end."

Defeat was another blow to Villa's hopes of displacing one of the 'Big Four' and left them six points adrift of the Champions League place.

"It's a real kick in the teeth," said Villa manager Martin O'Neill. "We were beaten and we didn't deserve to be beaten."

What a brilliant finish... glory glory Man United.....

  • sagren narain - 2009-04-05 20:07

this team will not lay down and die .... chasing pack beware this is the real deal, the only way they lose is when they are two men down and the ref is playing for the opposition. The path to victory is RED and the leader is a Scot.

  • razzak - 2009-04-05 20:26

great finish. displayed a true champion.

  • Andre Abrahams - 2009-04-05 22:03

Thats why we are world champions European champions and current premier leaugue champs oh yes dont forget charity shield leugue cup and vodacom cup. thats why we will lift the trophy again. liverpool watch and drool. Even inour down period we grind out results. Not when we flying high

  • Job David Smith - 2009-04-06 06:02

Man Utd you're the best ... ever. Viva United!!!

  • Carlsberg - 2009-04-06 07:58

Yeah, your Scot leader sure is something; all he has to do is tap on his watch in the direction of the officials and he gets 5 minutes of extra time! What a tactical genius! WHAT A CROCK!!! No one can justify that much injury time! There were 2 minutes, maybe 3, and that would've given you only one 1 undeserved point. Its just another blatant showing of how scared the officials are of Fergie, and how right Rafa was with what he said earlier in the season...

  • Shaheen - 2009-04-06 08:55

Great comeback. Just when all those Liverpool fans were smirking, thinking "The League is gonna be ours coz we 2 points top!", Ronaldo and Macheda stabbed a dagger through Liverpool hearts. Must feel like they've lost two points now. And to all who were starting to write United off..... think again... This is what Champions are made of. Ten first team players out with injury and suspension, and yet, United pull through with the wealth of young talent at the club. This kid's goal kinda reminds me of Wayne Rooney's first goal for Everton against Arsenal as a 16 year old.... Stunning!!!

  • Lily White - 2009-04-06 09:16

@ Carlberg: I take it you had a lot of Carlberg during the game? Either that or you are a fanatical fan. Liverpool? Third option then. Drunk AND fanatical.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-04-06 09:21

We Liverpool fans have always maintained & still maintain the title is Manure's to lose. But well done yesterday, under pressure. Can't say you guy's deserved it - thought Villa were excellent ! But, nothing has changed after this weekend anyway - log stays the same for the top 4. Except that it looks like another team is not scared of Manure anymore - could make things intresting ! Season far from over. All we have to do is keep winning & try to keep the pressure on Manure. Well said Carlsberg !

  • Ziah - 2009-04-06 09:22

I have one name on my lips...MACHEDA MACHEDA MACHEDA.@ Carlsberg why do Liverpool supporters sulk when United win...another question for you? What ship has never docked in Liverpool?...THE PREMIERSHIP...cheers :-P

  • The Man - 2009-04-06 09:24

@Carlsberg - They scored in the 93rd minute. The ref gave Aston Villa another 1 minute on top of the 5. We did not need the full 5 mins, thanks.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-04-06 09:39

Carlberg @ 7:58, spoken like a true Liverfool supporter, the injury time was completely justified, as Villa were wasting time like every other team that plays United, because they are so scared we will score, because champions always do. Poor Liverfools, thats what happens when you count the champions and the worlds best manager out, you always lose!!!!! United til I die, United til I die, I know I am, I'm sure I am, United til I die!

now now children dont sulk cos you were only on top for 24 hrs those 5 minutes were well deserved how long was young on the floor crying about a dead leg after his goal and villa time wasting was duly noted by the ref if you try dirty tactics you get caught, so please stop saying fergie has bought the refs thats a cheap lie some fat spanish waiter made up to try console himself that he's still not on top of anything and talking about refs in pockets friedel never should have been sent off not even slightly baby girl torres ran in to him and he gets sent off maybe once again you should look closer to home before making stupid accusations

  • Carlsberg - 2009-04-06 09:59

No, you scored in the 94th minute... i.e: a maximum of 3 minutes would've been used up by then. I don't mind when you guys win, if you read my comments every week you'd know that, but the ending of yesterday's match was just not right... Either way though the fight continues

  • Anonymous User - 2009-04-06 10:04

@Carlsberg. typical scouse. Liverpool are renowned for stealing victories in injury time this season, yet all u do is cry if united do the same. Glory Glory, the League is staying at Old Trafford!

  • Shaheen - 2009-04-06 11:15

I knew we'd get this type of response from all the Liverpool fans. Come on... You guys have scored more late goals than any other Premiership team this season. I remember not too long ago you all boasted "We're the comeback Kings" etc. But now that United has won in injury time it's not right? Grow up... that's football... Oh and didn't Liverpool win in stoppage time on Saturday? Either way, nothing has changed, and the duel goes on to next weekend....

  • THE SCOUSER - 2009-04-06 11:16

come on gents let these utd fans enjoy their victory, after all they haven't tasted a win in 3weeks....... and yes they will win the league, the volleyball league that is, with scholes been player of the season........

  • Anonymous User - 2009-04-06 11:26

Mr stretford if fridel got sent off or not, we were 4 up by that stage, it wouldn't have changed the game in anyway. we didnt have to buy 2mins of injury time to get a winner........ that same fat spanish waiter served utd a hell of an a$$ whipping..... so my friend go sleep its past your bed time.....

  • Anonymous User - 2009-04-06 11:33

anon user at 10.04am, it's not about whether you win the the game in injury time or not - the difference with the 8 games that we won in injury time is that we DESERVED it, as we outplayed the opposition. Can ManUre fans say the same about yesterday ? Everyone but Manure fans agrees that Villa deserved at least a point. But well done anyway - the fight is not over yet

  • Anonymous User - 2009-04-06 12:06

I am a Man U supporter who will acknowledge that Villa deserved a point. They played really well. So isnt it quite scary for all the Liverfool fans that we were missing EIGHT (yup, you heard it...) players and in other words deserved the other point. And no, time waisting does not construe $$$ bought over refs, but it does translate into time added on. Just think about it this way, after Fergie retires, Macheda will still be a legend at United. Feel sorry for you guys in future years when we can pick players from our reserves which can compete with 5th on the league and actually win. GO RED DEVILS!!!!

  • Anonymous User - 2009-04-06 12:11

the best team won! the trophies and the league position prove that!!! now stop nagging about wat could have been and refs being paid off! Liverpool always looking for a luck...... it proves that they cant get to the top of the league themselves they have to wait for United to slip up!!! who else can take an unknown player and catapult him to stardom overnite? only Sir Alex and thats wat the article is about!!!

  • Anonymous User - 2009-04-06 12:20

i saw the LFC reserves play the other nite! i have never seen any of them in the first team BUT at United u get players that can come on from the reserve team and win a game!!! wat does that say about Alex Fergusons ability to scout players??? hes proved it time and time again he is the greatest manager in the Premiership EVERYONE knows that except for the idiots who think that one 4-1 defeat is gonna stop him dead in his tracks! glory glory Man United top of the League and doin it with Reserve players!!! suck on that oppertunist scums!!!

  • KANTHYM NAIDOO - 2009-04-06 12:55

  • Anonymous User - 2009-04-06 13:02

Rafa has already given our youngster's a chance this year - N'gog (who scored & set up the 2nd goal at Sunderland), Spearing (when we beat Real Madrid 4-0), El Zhar who set up the late winners earlier in the season, Insua who has been oustanding so far, etc, so Anon User at 12.20, get your facts straight. And not one of my fellow 'Pudlian's mentioned the 4-1 hiding we gave you at Old Trafford on this article - guess no matter what you might achieve this season, that will still hurt ManUre fans the most :-)

  • S - 2009-04-06 13:08

Why ARE you Fools on this blog anyway?? Must have been so intrigued to read the article about our latest addition to the firing squad - and a reserve nogal. What A team. Who can now doubt the credentials of Fergie. To pick a 17 year old kid (Macheda) and have the confidence in him winning it for Man U. I believe a lot of us Man U fans was in disbelief of this selection. Yesterdays game and our visit (Me and my son - Luigi's) was definately some of the best momemnts in our lives as Man U Fans. Viva Man U

We lost so what huh, lest you forget there is still a second leg & all we need is a minimum of a 2 goal lead & 3 to win. Not impossible considering we have done it before & in the finals nogal. So mate shut your mouth & stop creeping up chelsea's @ss & look at the bigger picture which is this.....Manure not winning the premiership nor the champions trophy, they will have to make do with the cup that you got for charity & that Miss World title that you won (lmao).

  • Anonymous User - 2009-04-14 12:20

@ Anonymous User 4/9/2009 1:15 PM, I think you need to get you head of the clouds to start thinking straight - 2 goals at Stamford Bridge wont do you need to score 3 to be in the match - 2-0 for LFC will mean an exit based on away goals. Good luck!!!
