Liverpool thrash Newcastle

2009-05-03 16:54

London - Liverpool moved back to within three points of Premier League leaders Manchester United after beating relegation-threatened Newcastle 3-0 at Anfield on Sunday.

Two goals in six minutes from Yossi Benayoun and Dirk Kuyt sent second-placed Liverpool, who have played one game more than United, on the way to victory against a Newcastle side who had Joey Barton sent-off 13 minutes from time for a wild challenge on Xabi Alonso.

Brazil midfielder Lucas added a third goal, his first in the Premier League, three minutes from time.

Defeat left Newcastle three points adrift of safety with just three games remaining in which to secure their Premier League status, starting with the north-east derby against fellow drop candidates Middlesbrough a week on Monday.

Everyone should know by now that you should never tackle Xabi. Never never never...

  • Nazeem - 2009-05-04 09:16

Strange... No Liverpool fan is talking about the clearly offside first goal scored by Tossi Benamoan.....:-) Had it been United.....

  • Shaheen - 2009-05-04 10:07

Nazeem, you're gonna infuriate them... psst... The linesman played him onside ;)... didn't you know that? LOL... Anyways... won't be long until we hear the "Next Season" comforting lines that has been echoed for two decades now....

  • Anonymous User - 2009-05-04 10:24

as a 'Pool fan. i'll admit the 1st goal was marginally offside. But see the Utd peanut gallery forget to mention the score could easily have been 5-0 even if that goal wasn't counted after we hit the bar 3 times !? Keep up the pressure my beloved Reds !

  • Anonymous User - 2009-05-04 10:29

I think that most of the LFC supporters are in mourning for not getting their weekly dose of being top of the table albeit for a few hours - withdrawal symptoms perhaps!!!

  • Red Blooded - 2009-05-04 11:47

No wonder they won. Newcastle finished off with 10 men. Liverpool with 12, including the linesman who didn't blow for offside. C'mon scousers... lets hear how ONE goal didn't change the match ???

  • Anonymous User - 2009-05-04 11:52

nazeem the new offside law states the attacking players whole body must be ahead of the defender, and clearly yossi wasn't. i'll send you a copy of the fifa rules, i understand you guys will have a problem reading it, after all you guys do have a 4 word club song.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-05-04 11:53

The difference Red Blooded is that we were not LOSING at the time, or even being outplayed ...

  • Anonymous User - 2009-05-04 12:15

Typical Man U supporters, big mouths again, we will talk again after Tuesday, when Arsenal send you packing.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-05-04 12:16

From the Daily Post today "However, it was typical of Liverpool’s season that as the skipper returned, Fernando Torres dropped out because of another hamstring niggle. The talismanic pairing has started just 11 Premier League games together this season, less than a third of the campaign. And it’s impossible not to wonder what might have been had Gerrard and Torres been able to reprise their devastating partnership on a more regular basis."

  • da happy people! - 2009-05-04 12:41

Out of interest, in how many games were Liverpools opponents sent off this season. In almost every game somebody from the opposition were sent off. The most glaring example was against Chelsea, in an evenly poised game, Frank Lampard's was suspiciously send off. That handed Liverpool the game.

  • TrueTreble - 2009-05-04 13:09

@Anonymous User 5/4/2009 11:52 AM, then you are saying Giggs and Ronaldo were on-side against Arsenal last week? At least both feet were in line with the last defender and upper bodies were leaning forward. That score should have been 3 - 0 to United and then certainly would have qualified for Rome. Sometimes, it is too close to call and teams get lucky, other teams not. Liverpoll got lucky!

  • Anonymous User - 2009-05-04 13:15

people forget how UTD always get to score in the 94th min of the game.....?? they won 4 games this year like that....., why cant the ref blow off in 91 mins...??

  • Carlsberg - 2009-05-04 13:38

Didn't think untited fans would be stupid enough to start this argument, but there you go...Very quiet aren't you on Giggs being allowed his goal after a clear foul?! I mean everyone stopped, even Giggs himself looked surprised! And the penalty that wasn't given? There would have been an uproar had it been the other way around... And what about your brat rooney, who doesn't even get a yellow (nevermind sent off) for kicking another player?? Seriously, if anyone has a "12th man" its fergie, and only because the entire FA is scared of upsetting the old man...

  • Anonymous User - 2009-05-04 13:48

'Pool & Arsenal have won the most games this year in the dying minutes & 'Pool have won the most 'comeback' games, i.e. losing the game but go on to win it

  • The Stretford Faithful - 2009-05-04 14:16

Anonymous User @ 5/4/2009 1:48 PM it doesnt matter who has the most comebacks in the year what matters is that united have won the most games check the log if you dont believe me thats why were on top and going to stay there

  • Anonymous User - 2009-05-04 14:26

2 CUPS AND STILL IN POLE POSITION FOR 2 MORE!!! LET ME SIMPLIFY IT FOR YOU GUYS!!! WINNING TROPHIES MEANS YOU CAN HAVE BRAGGING RITES ........................WINNING NOTHING MEANS YOU SHOULD SHUT UP!!!

  • Mervz - 2009-05-04 14:36

i dont know why all the fuss, cos liverpool shud worry bout the westham game which i think they will be sweating more over than the torres hamstring. i think they will need more than luck to win that game. if u can recall most of the recent goals scored by Pool came from defensive errors by the opposition. Your luck will run out soon, cos some teams defend far better than others especially in their home turf.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-05-04 16:10

Ofcourse goals are scored because the opposition's defense fails ! Luck - that's something 'Pool are in desperate need of - we hit the woodwork 5 times against Blackburn & 3 times yesterday ! As for bragging rights Anon user, we have them thanks to doing the DOUBLE over you guy's this year. Stretford Faithful - true, but you have also lost twice as much as the Reds this year. It's only because of a terrible January of draws & hitting the woodwork too much that ManUre find themselves ahead of 'Pool

  • Nazeem - 2009-05-04 17:49

Anonymous user @ 11:52am.. Firstly, stop hiding behind the annoying ANONYMOUS name.. Man up and ID yourself.. Secondly, as a carded referee myself I am no stranger to the offside law which happens to be the most misunderstood law of the game. Your understanding, or misunderstanding of this law, is a classical case in point.. Please refer to FIFA's rule 11 in the laws of the game manual for a simple explaination which even you will understand. Visit www.fifa.com to educate yourself. You can even watch an interactive little presentation designed specifically for idiots like yourself... Oh and lastly... GLORY GLORY MAN UNITED......

  • Anonymous User - 2009-05-05 09:38

anon @ 4.10pm!!! DID U GUYS WIN A TROPHY FOR THAT? maybe they should make a trophy just for the LFC and United Game so that you guys can actually get some silverware then you can brag so until then SHUT UP!!!

  • Anonymous User - 2009-05-05 13:47

You kids have no idea what bragging rights are. The Man U - LFC game is not about trophies. It's about PRIDE & BRAGGING RIGHTS. And while ManUre have had it over the last few seasons, this year, LFC have it, and in a BIG way !

  • Krakatoa - 2009-05-05 15:39

Stevie G is so desperate and focussed to win the EPL, its the only thing missing from his set of honours (besides the Club World championship of course). I wish Ryan Giggs would just give him one of his!

  • Anonymous User - 2009-05-05 15:56

U TAKE YOUR PRIDE AND WE'LL KEEP THE TROPHIES!!!

  • Man4Life - 2009-05-06 10:29

My PVR is ready to imortalise the record breaking achievements of a record breaking team...To all Liverpool supporters, your team gave us a good stumping in both rounds, well done....which gave you 6 pionts.....guess rafa don't know how to use 6 pionts hey

  • Anonymous User - 2009-05-06 11:24

Just remember you are still trying to MATCH our records, before you can actually break them, hahahaha !

  • Strike - 2009-05-08 17:45
