Liverpool sign Charlton defender

London - Liverpool on Saturday announced the signing of highly-rated defender Joe Gomez from Charlton Athletic on a five-year deal.

Media reports said that the Anfield club had paid £3.5 million for the England under-19 international, who can play in central defence or at full-back.

Gomez, who made 24 appearances for second-tier Charlton last season, becomes Liverpool's fourth summer signing after James Milner, Danny Ings and Adam Bogdan.
