Liverpool ruin Torres's debut

2011-02-06 20:06

London - Liverpool ruined Fernando Torres's much-heralded Chelsea debut on Sunday when they won 1-0 at Stamford Bridge to spoil the champions' hopes of taking advantage of Manchester United's first defeat of the season.

Torres, who moved from Anfield to Chelsea last week for a reported $80.54m, had two early chances but faded before being substituted after 66 minutes, much to the delight of the travelling Liverpool fans.

Liverpool defended superbly throughout and secured their fourth successive win - all with clean sheets - three minutes later when Raul Meireles took advantage of a mix-up between Petr Cech and Branislav Ivanovic to hook in the only goal.

Manchester United, beaten by bottom club Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, lead the standings on 54 points. Arsenal, who blew a 4-0 lead to draw 4-4 in an incredible match at Newcastle United, are second on 50.

Manchester City are third on 49 with Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur on 44. Liverpool moved up to sixth on 38.

Not a particularly entertaining game, but can one say 4 clean sheets and close to a champions league spot !

  • Jay - 2011-02-06 20:46

Heheheheh!, you can buy presidents, huge planes. massives yatches, buy many Torres's, enough food for fat Frank, but you cannot buy history!!

  • Bob - 2011-02-06 22:38

    I love it!

  • Shaun0123 - 2011-02-07 02:03

Well Torres wanted a "Bigger Club" - he has got just that. As far as I am concerned only LFC & MUFC are the big clubs in England. Dont worry Torres - you will win nothing this year with Chelsea. Who the **** needs Torres ..........

      seeps.mazi - 2011-02-07 07:04

Totally agree Shaun!!!! I was stoked to hear the LFC fans singing Torres,Torres you should've joined a big club!!LMFAO!!!! I'm a Man United fan but I was willing the old enemy to win this one purely because I can't stand Chelski and their arrogant fans who have nothing to be arrogant about....

      boyd.lance - 2011-02-07 12:34

Oh, and it obviously had nothing to do with your loss to Wolves hey. Ok, Seeps...I'll buy it...the enemy of my enemy is my friend.

      seeps.mazi - 2011-02-07 12:59

No Lance I took the defeat like a man and we never deserved anything more than what we got...... But Chelsea fans are waaaaaay too arrogant for a side with a couple of FA cups and even less Leagues. I made money thanks to the scousers plus I have plenty banter with my mates who are mainly Pool fans so there is a mutual respect for either teams history

AND ALL OF A SUDDEN I AM A WOLVES SUPPORTER ! WAHHH

      A(N)ON - 2011-02-07 10:03

      All of a sudden I'm a Geordie....WAHHH

      A(N)ON - 2011-02-07 10:13

Don't blame u, I too would jump ship if my pathetic team were 4-0 up after 20 minutes and ended up drawing the game!

      seeps.mazi - 2011-02-07 11:29

All of a sudden you....................... wait you've always been a chop! Nevermind!

      Gunner - 2011-02-07 14:54

@A(N)ON - ....with the help of a ref any team can achieve that. Ask all the manure supporters....

      A(N)ON - 2011-02-07 16:57

@ (Tail) Gunner, cannot understand u man - you complain about the immature ManU supporters calling you're team names (Fabricass, Arse nil - u get the pic!) and then you poison your cause by doing the same. Anyway's my dig was at Sidestepper who, based on his posts on this site, is an absolute chop and needed to be reminded so! If you feel the need to motivate concession of a 4-0 deficit that please feel free to do so! I'll bet in your conspiracy world that the ref was a ManU supporter and Arsene was possessed by a voluptuous (she-Red) Devil who caused him to make some terrible judgement decisions...

      Gunner Nash - 2011-02-08 09:23

@ A(N)ON: I think u got the wrong guy dude... As for me, there is no excuse for allowing any team to come back from a 4 goal defecit, totally pathetic.

  • Bob - 2011-02-07 08:13

Absolutely stoked, that is my best result since the Euro final of 2005, loved it Torres hardly got a sniff apart from one bad pass giving him a chance, as the flag said 18 league titles and 5 European cups and the clown wants to leave to a bigger club ? how does the Chelsea record stand up to that, how does any british clubs record stand up to that, we are on our way back woo hoo.

      seeps.mazi - 2011-02-07 11:32

Bob I'm a huge Man United fan and I have to say it was a touch of class when they rolled the flag out because he is a clown to say anything of that nature...... Un about your saying how does any british clubs record stand up to that? well debatable because in all fairness what we lack in European Cups we make up in FA Cups and Leagues are tied( till the end of the season). But a top result for LFC I was trully stoked too

      Gunner - 2011-02-07 14:55

      Yes....he will prove himself

  • Dnt8 - 2011-02-07 08:27

      boyd.lance - 2011-02-07 12:31

HAHAHAHA!!! I'm sure as soon as he was out of the camera's view he broke down and cried...oh how I have been smiling since last night. Ain't no better fans than Liverpool fans...YNWA!!!!

  • bakes - 2011-02-08 07:03

Who cares if Torres left the club, remember players are just tools being used by clubs to win trophies. U cant blame Torres for leaving, he did what he thinks is best, and good luck to him. Well done to Liverpool, on a good win, now try and get some consistency.Thats what wins trophies.

  • Dok - 2011-02-08 20:52

Once a Red, now to us you're dead! Torres always had the heart to play for Liverpool. The funny thing is that a heart means nothing if it does not beat, and his heart never did beat for Liverpool.
