Liverpool crush Chelsea

2012-05-08 23:04

Liverpool - Chelsea will have to win the Champions League final if they are to compete in next season's edition after a 4-1 defeat by Liverpool on Tuesday ended their hopes of a top four Premier League finish.

Just three days after beating Liverpool 2-1 in the FA Cup final at Wembley, Chelsea were 3-0 behind inside half an hour at Anfield following an own-goal from Michael Essien and goals from Jordan Henderson and Daniel Agger.

Ramires scored for Chelsea early in the second half before Jonjo Shelvey ended any hope of a comeback with his first Premier League goal.

England's top four clubs will enter next term's Champions League unless Chelsea beat Bayern Munich at the German club's ground in the final on May 19.

If Chelsea win, it will deprive the team in fourth of a place in the preliminary round.

This defeat meant the top four was beyond the reach of Chelsea, who will now finish in sixth spot, as it left them five points behind fourth-placed Tottenham with just three on offer for beating already relegated Blackburn in their final league match of the season on Sunday.

"I think Liverpool were better tonight," Chelsea interim manager Roberto di Matteo told Sky Sports.

The Italian defended his decision to make eight changes from the team that ran out at Wembley by saying: "We've come so far because we've used the energy and players we have in the squad.

"That is the only way to be in the race until now. I have no regrets," the former Chelsea midfielder added.

"We've had very intense games and to get yourself up for all those has been a big demand. I thought tonight fresh legs would give us a better chance.

"We've got a game on Sunday and we want to finish our last game well to go into the Champions League final in a positive mood."

Victory, in their final home league game of the season, took Liverpool into eighth place but, despite a League Cup final win over second-tier Cardiff this term, no-one knows better than Reds manager and Anfield great Kenny Dalglish that more is expected of the Merseysiders.

"The players and everyone will be happy we ended on a high note," said the former Liverpool and Scotland striker.

"That performance was on a par with many this season but we've not had the results those deserve.

"For us it is a satisfactory evening and I hope the supporters go away happy. I don't think there are many other places where supporters would turn up and be so supportive, especially after the Cup final," Dalglish added.

The Reds' first three goals came in a dramatic nine-minute burst.

Essien put through his own net after a brilliant 19th minute run and cross by Liverpool striker Luis Suarez before Henderson capitalised on a slip by Chelsea captain John Terry to slide the ball home.

Then Agger, after Chelsea failed to clear a corner, headed in from close range.

Liverpool's Stewart Downing then saw his first half stoppage-time penalty hit the post before Ramires, who scored Chelsea's opener at Wembley, pulled a goal back for the visitors early in the second period.

But Liverpool were 4-1 up restored their three-goal lead in the 61st minute when Chelsea reserve keeper Ross Turnbull, making a rare appearance in place of Petr Cech, miscued a clearance from outside his box straight to Shelvey and the midfielder steered the ball into an empty net from 30 yards.

Well done Liverpool! Pity you couldn't play like this on Saturday, but at least you have proven yourselves as worthy competition (as per all the anti Liverpool comments on Saturday).

Topsy, we ALREADY qualified for Europa League when we won the Carling Cup (and yes, we knocked Chelsea out of that as well)

Sean maybe we won't but I reckon we will finish ahead of an ageing crap Scum Utd, long may old blue nose remain there, he is leading them down the plug hole, we will certainly be playing Champions league football 2014, I would take a large bet that the scum won't be, they are an embarrasment representing the EPL in that cup anyway.

  • Niel - 2012-05-09 07:40

Ah the pool. Good win. Now you can finish in 8th position with a little bit more points. Let's be honest though, Chelsea B team.only terry, ivanovic, ramires would make first team.

  • JoffeyCampino - 2012-05-09 07:55

I think Chelsea have just about thrown in the towel to finish in the top 4 with Spurs and Arsenal set to take it. So, they are concentrating themselves more on the UEFA Final....Bayern vs Chelsea... Chelsea need to win to keep themselves in the Champions League, whereas Munich are playing on their home ground, so both teams have the incentive to go for it. If Chel$ki lose out on Champions football then it won't be as much of a disaster because they have the resources backing them to keep their players or buy if some decide to leave

We played our B team with the CL final in sight. It has not had any effect,we beat Liverpool to take the FA cup- thats when it was needed. Its about strategic utilisation of resources. Even if we had beaten Liverpool both Newcastle and Tottenham would have had to lose their games on Sunday for us to come 4th. Concentrate effort on the CL final,

  • Jonathan Rose - 2012-05-09 10:38

Liverpool is way to inconsistent, only performs against the big teams and struggle against unfancied clubs..i think their mentality must change..i still support them doe..redS 4 life

      Daven - 2012-05-09 11:58

I agree - they will go out of their way to beat big teams - almost like when they play united every season, when they beat united they win the league hahahaha shame

  • Byron - 2012-05-09 12:42

The way Chelsea played (pathetic) last night, even Wolves would have beaten them. Liverpool don't get carried away. Don't get carried away with the Carling cup also, whilst they used their 1st team always, the "better" teams use their 2nd string teams for grooming in the Carling cup competition. Liverpool only beat Swansea through penaty shoot out in final, so that wasn't a brilliant show also. In FA cup they had a string of good draws to play at home and a weaken Man Utd and Everton teams at that. 50 million pounds loss in the last financial year, so new players are going to hard to come by. but its good to be optimistic!

      Bob - 2012-05-09 13:52

Byron, your knowledge of the game astounds me, you know so much more than the rest of us, for instance I think you are the only one that knows Liverpool beat Swansea on Penalties in the Carling Cup final, the rest of us air heads thought it was Cardiff, it's hardly Liverpool's fault that Man Utd & Everton are weak teams.

      aadil.esack - 2012-05-09 14:26

Please go look at the Chelsea & Man City team sheets in the Carling Cup games, or Man Utd & Everton team sheets in the FA Cup games - we knocked all of them out because we were the better team on the day - our problem is consistency more than quality. We hammered Chelsea last night because we played fantastic, not because they were pathetic. Sore loser's ....

      Bob - 2012-05-09 14:40

aadil, yes it was their full sides but Byron was just pointing out the obvious, they are weak sides or weaken sides as he puts it LOL

  • martin.gee.godfrey - 2012-05-09 13:51

Chelsea weren't interested last night. They are banking on winning the CL to get into the competition next year. The FA Cup is a far bigger trophy than the Carling cup (which I might add, was only won on penalties! ie lottery). I keep hearing 'pool fans saying "at least we have a trophy" well that's like Man U supporters saying "well at least the premier league trophy is in Manchester" if City win the league. Silverware is one thing, but the league placings are more important to a club than a trophy named after a beer!

      aadil.esack - 2012-05-09 14:29

No, we won the Carling Cup by beating the likes of Chelsea & Man City, who played full strenght teams in those games - even Stoke away is not easy for anyone - yes, in the final, we dominated without finishing it off & ended up making hard work of it, but delivered in the end. You sound like an everton fan, and in liverpool, they are called the "bitters" for a reason ...

      martin.gee.godfrey - 2012-05-09 14:43

Spoken like a true Liverpool fan, you won on penalties, end of!. 120 million pounds and you can't beat Cardiff in 120 minutes! Please. Yes I am an Evertonian and a proud one. The "bitter" tag is such a typical response when you have nothing better to say. 7th place on the log with a team that has no money in the bank to buy players is a pretty good season for a "small" club as everyone likes to call us. And if you know your history.........

      martin.gee.godfrey - 2012-05-09 14:54

PS: Evertonians are born, not manufactured, unlike the vast majority of Liverpool and United fans

      aadil.esack - 2012-05-10 09:22

Not sure where you get 120m when we spent only 42m Nett, and that was for a FULL squad refurb, which is a bargain - Chelsea paid us more than that for Torres alone, lol. You make it sound like we were not the MUCH more dominant team in that final, lol - yes, agreed, finishing was poor & credit to Cardiff who never gave up, but at the end of the day, we lifted the trophy, did we not ? Ah, the "we broke" excuse again - Moyes has been there 10, yes TEN years, and what has he actually achieved ? Considering the stability you've had, and the fact that most of your squad has been together for a while, you SHOULD be challenging for Europa. The media love Moyes, but fact is, if Pienaar didn't come back to save you this season, you would be in deep trouble, and that's a Rafa Fact ! And LOL at the "born not manufactured" comment - considering the Reds have not won the league in over 2 decades, we are anything but "glory"" supporter's, and we stick by the team through thick & thin. The odd piece of silverware does feel great though :-) In all honesty, i have huge respect for the Toffees, despite the rivalry, and I remember in my primary school days in the 80's, the top 2 in the league came from Merseyside, not Manchester, and hopefully those days will return one day - anything is possible these days with foreign owner's with lots of cash to splash
