Hitzlsperger hangs up boots

London - Former Germany midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger says he is retiring from football following a string injury problems.

The 31-year-old Hitzlsperger made 52 appearances for Germany, including playing at the World Cup and European Championship.

Hitzlsperger has played for clubs including Stuttgart, Aston Villa, West Ham and Everton during his career.

According to the Suddeutsche Zeitung, Hitzlsperger says he has already had his mind made up for the last few days.

"I've been sure for the last couple of days.

"I'm not going to carry on playing," he was quoted as saying.
