Hernandez out for 2 weeks

New Jersey - Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez will be out of action for at least two weeks after he was hospitalised for a concussion sustained during a training session on Tuesday.

The Mexico international was injured when he was hit by a ball on the top of his head and spent a night in hospital. He missed United's 4-0 win over the MLS All-Star team on Wednesday.

After the game, manager Alex Ferguson said he had always planned for Hernandez to have an extended break after playing in the Gold Cup for Mexico.

United next travel to Washington D.C for a Champions League final rematch against Barcelona. Ferguson's team will begin the defense of their title August 14.

"He would never have been available for Barcelona, anyway," Ferguson said. "He's just coming back from a break after playing the (CONCACAF) Gold Cup for Mexico. He wasn't going to be involved for two or three weeks, anyway.

"We took him to the hospital overnight, and all the scans were good. He spent today resting in his hotel room."

Ferguson said Hernandez had been cleared to travel with the team.

The effects of the concussion did not become immediately apparent, as witnesses to Tuesday night's practice at Red Bull Arena noted that Hernandez was the last player to leave the field. After practice, the striker ran sprints with a team-mate.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
