Henderson lauds skipper Gerrard

Cape Town - Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson has anointed Steven Gerrard as the best captain not only in the Premier League and England, but "in the game itself".

Gerrard recently celebrated his 11th anniversary as Reds skipper, having first been handed the armband at Anfield in 2003, while he also held the role with the Three Lions between 2012 and 2014.

And Henderson, who plays alongside Gerrard for both club and country, believes he is the finest leader to have ever graced the footballing stage.

"Stevie's probably not only the best captain for Liverpool and before with England, but in the game itself," Henderson told the official Liverpool FC magazine.

"Being around him has benefited me a lot. Every day I watch him. He's been the best and most influential player here for such a long time but he still wants to get better.

"He takes training really seriously and sets the tone for how things should be. The most important thing is he puts the team in front of everybody else including himself.”

Queens Park Rangers host Henderson and Gerrard's Liverpool side at Loftus Road Stadium at 14:30 on Sunday, 19 October.
