London - Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard could be facing an FA investigation over an alleged V-sign he made at referee Andre Marriner, according to reports on Tuesday.

Gerrard was booked in the 81st minute of Liverpool's 1-0 defeat to Wigan Athletic on Monday, and television pictures seemed to show him directing a two-fingered gesture at Marriner while mouthing an obscenity.

Marriner did not notice the gesture but the FA may consider charging Gerrard.

"I don't know, I was too far away," said Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez when asked about the incident.
