Gang violence at Giggs' home

London - Cars belonging to reporters parked outside the home of Manchester United star Ryan Giggs have been attacked and vandalised by a group of men, British police said on Tuesday.

Greater Manchester police said they were called to the player's address in Worsley, Salford, close to the city of Manchester in northern England, following reports of damage to a number of vehicles.

"Officers attended and discovered at least six cars had been vandalised after a group of offenders arrived in a Ford Transit van and attacked the vehicles," police said in a statement.

Media, citing reporters at the scene, said tyres were slashed, and cars pelted with flour and eggs.

Police, who are investigating, said no one was injured during the incident. They also said they had no knowledge of the assailants being masked, contrary to some reports.

A British politician defied a court order on Monday by identifying Giggs as the soccer player fighting a legal battle to prevent newspapers from publishing allegations of an affair.

For weeks, British media have been fighting the growing use by the rich and famous of "super injunctions" - English court orders which prevent publication of unwelcome stories and prohibit journalists from even reporting that a ban is in place.

Manchester United are preparing to play Barcelona in the Champions' League final in London on Saturday.
