Fergie set to step down

2010-04-20 13:50

Cape Town - Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has announced that he will vacate his position in 2011.

According to British newspaper The Sun, Manchester United have begun the search for their next manager after Ferguson told the board “One more season and I’m out”.

Former Chelsea manager and current Inter Milan manager Jose Mourinho is the favourite to take over one of the most high-profile jobs in world football, with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, Aston Villa manager Martin O’Neill, Barcelona’s Pep Guardiola and current England manager Fabio Capello also reportedly on the Manchester United radar.

Ferguson has created a dynasty at the Manchester club over the last 23 years, winning 11 English Premiership titles as well as 2 UEFA Champions League titles.

I think Martin O Neil, Alex Macnish or David Moyes. Sir Alex , I hate MANU , but no doubt you will go down as the greatest manager of all time. The game will not be the same without you.

  • LL COOL J - 2010-04-20 14:15

u are a master at ur own journey, no other manager on earth can ever be compared to you, i hate MANU as well, but u are the best in mind games i should say, u will be sorely missed

  • Lumbe - 2010-04-20 14:15

  • Hershil - 2010-04-20 14:15

Manchester U - why do you have to go now Fergie . if you really are going chose Harry Redknapp as our new manager .

  • Stephen - 2010-04-20 14:17

I really hate Man U, but Fergie is a very good manager. I really hope it is not Martin O Neill. My Villa need him to take us to the Champions League. Can't see Wenger going there either. They will miss Fergie, definitely.

  • TA - 2010-04-20 14:17

The best manager of all time. I think the Premier league need the Special One, Jose Mourino. He bring charecter and swaga to Man United

  • just overrated - 2010-04-20 14:19

overrated manager , overrated team...and all i can say is finally...not sure pep guardiloa's name is there.... he is currently the coach of the moment playing for the team of the moment and this barcelona team will be the team to beat for the next 10 years so i'm pretty sure Pep will not be going to man utd when he already is at a far better more prestigious club like barca

  • misheck gwayawaya - 2010-04-20 14:23

thanks for the jod well done

  • Question @ Kube$ - 2010-04-20 14:23

Kube$ - something that has always bemused me, why do you 'hate' MANU or any other football or sports team? What have they ever done to you? Surely, you must have issues to 'hate' another sports team? I love supporting my team, but don't hate any other club. Why should I? Perhaps you can enlighten me? Yes, Fergie is one of the sporting greats and will be sorely missed.

  • John Matthews - 2010-04-20 14:25

Kube - I like an honest man!

  • SS - 2010-04-20 14:26

Whoever it is. I pity the him. Massive shoes to fill.

  • The Oracle - 2010-04-20 14:29

I agree Kube. Man U will appoint a British manager. David Moyes and Martin O Neil fits the bill perfectly. Will hate it if "The Special One" goes to Man U!

  • jeremy - 2010-04-20 14:35

Definitely one of the greatest soccer managers ever. Can't help wondering how England would have performed if Sir Alex had been manager instead Sven Goran. Or, because I was brought up on Merseyside, how good Liverpool would have been with Sir Alex at the helm.....

  • frank - 2010-04-20 14:35

"According to the sun newspaper.." Believing them is like believing anything the ANC says!

  • Man U - 2010-04-20 14:38

Perhaps Keano to take over...Nah! Anyway, whoever takes over has massive shoes to fill! I personally think Martin O Neill will be a good choice. King Alex, you are just great!

  • nazeem - 2010-04-20 14:40

you are the best and no one can replace you...

  • The Sun is garbage - 2010-04-20 14:42

The Sun is a tabloid newspaper. I'll believe it when it is officially announced on Man U's website. Until then I don't believe it.

  • y2k - 2010-04-20 14:42

To those man u haters that admit the Fergie is a legend , well done , cos you a real fan of football, to the other @r$eHolE$ , go watch rugby, the rules change every season there

  • Gullible - 2010-04-20 14:53

I just have to have a nice little giggle, I used to live in the UK and The Sun was the biggest tabloid and gossip newspaper in the whole country. This article is absolute bollocks, check the Man Utd website, there's no mention of Fergie stepping down, check Sky news no mention. Somehow I think it would constitute breaking news on there respective media...

  • Anon - 2010-04-20 15:03

@just overrated dude you sound depressed with whoever you are currently supporting. or maybe you're just depressed :P

  • Biza85 - 2010-04-20 15:29

@just overrated 4/20/2010 2:19 PM - You have a real carrot up ur A$$, Fergie is one of the best coachs around, any team supporter would agree to that... Cant u just admit that, u r just very depressed bout ur team and cant see agreat manager when there is one... very sad on ur part... But to Fergie, what a great career u have mad for urself... well done and good luck with ur future endevours... GLORY GLORY

  • bee - 2010-04-20 15:30

aaaaaw nt yet its like nxt year

  • JustinD - 2010-04-20 15:32

@ overrated....In one sentance you say he is overrated but then say finally. In truth you are actually very glad because he keeps on wipping your team season in season out year in year out...Yes I see how you think he is overrated...You are an whining little baby run along and let mommy dry your eyes!!! Bring on Jose, he will make sure United maintain there overrated performance for years to come.

  • Suri - 2010-04-20 15:33

Maybe this announcement is for real... but maybe also this is another clever tactic to get the most out his team for the title run in. At a club like Man U, sentiment goes a long way. If nothing else Fergie deserves the honour of surpassing Liverpool's 18 and his squad knows this and will feel obligated to give their best. If he doesn't this year he knows he has 2011 to do it. The timing is just perfect. Another masterful move by the boss??? At least I think so!

  • byron - 2010-04-20 15:37

its Man Utd you twots! Now get it right!just shows how much you guys actually know!

  • Graham - 2010-04-20 15:46

@ just overrated: Overrated? 25 titles, including 11 championships, two Champs leagues, 5 FA Cups! What would he need to do to be valued as a properly rated manager? What a dork you are. Stop taking air from our lungs, you oxygen thief!

  • Nyalenda - 2010-04-20 15:48

Only the special one can lead Man U to another century of success. He's the best tactcian and managers by far. No one can fil those Fergie's shoes than the one and only JOSE MOURINHO.

  • @byron - 2010-04-20 15:56

You must be the idiot with the MAN U duve set, toothbrush and toothpaste

  • dumi - 2010-04-20 15:56

thanks fergie it was great journey

  • Mac - 2010-04-20 15:59

Sometime ago it was stated in the British media that Mark Hughes is being groomed for this position...

  • KR - 2010-04-20 16:20

Wow, what an incredibly successful era. Now... BRING ON MOURINHO!!!!

  • delboy - 2010-04-20 16:34

    Shankly, Shankly, Shankly, Shankly !!!!!

  • Kube$ - 2010-04-20 16:34

I hate them cos Ronaldo destroyed us last season, they bowled us out at 49, when we were on an unbeaten streak, its football mate, I am allowed to be jealous, and honestly they have achieved every accolade possible except the world club champs. If you watch the Arsenal VS Manu games you would und why there is so much hatred, goes back to the days when Veira and Keane were duelling, when we clapped Ruud Van Nistel for missing that penalty, or even further back when Steve Bruce got his nose broken in that huge bust up, its just sport, I dont hate them aggressiveley, just sport bro... Damn straight , HUGE HUGE shoes to fill, dont know how the next manager will handle the pressure of always being in Sir Alex shadow. I think Roy Keane, Stevie Bruce, Gordan Strachan or even David Becks could also be candidates, I really hope someone from the UK coaches MANu. Either way, no manager will ever be as big as Sir Alex, I am glad I lived to see you man, go well you Scottish Tosser, at least now may be Arsenal may win something and at least I can say we assaulted you with a pizza, lol.

  • lehlohonolo - 2010-04-20 16:39

I wish they take Arsene Wenger so he can destroy Man u ,the same way he has done with Arsenal.

  • Lionel - 2010-04-20 16:44

Um, if Fergie were really stepping down it would be the biggest news in the sporting world yet I find it strange that neither Sky, BBC or the official ManUtd site have any mention of this. The only source News24 provides is a newspaper, and I use that word loosely, that is well know for either completely fabricating stories or misrepresenting them. If this is the standard of journalism that news24 has dropped to then it is no longer worth visiting.

  • Kube$ - 2010-04-20 17:11

@Lionel, calm down homey, the dude has to step down some time, I also dont think he will step down, the old slagger still has it in him, and this oke lives footi...but facts are facts rather start speculating now cos the dude has to go some time

  • Brendon - 2010-04-21 03:46

Wow!. As a Liverpool fan, I can only admire what Fergie has done at Man U. He has been truly remarkable, a man of great character, personality, and skill, with a incredible eye for talent and grooming it. Took man u (who lets face it) had not won the premiership/league since the 1960's and produced 11 titles (maybe 12!). From one Scotsman to another, I salute you, SLANGE!

  • Man U - 2010-04-21 06:53

@Kube$: Long time! Some info, Utd have won a World Club Champs trophy. We beat some Ecuadorian side 1-0 in the final. The same season we qualified was when we beat that Blue team in the CL final!

  • MAN UTD SUCK - 2010-04-21 06:56

  • VINNY - 2010-04-21 07:43

About time - United is a spent force end of this season and to come , now he can retire and do what he really likes - drink and chew gum...

  • Never Walk Alone - 2010-04-21 08:17

This is all a smokescreen - Fergie aint going no where ! Especially if MU do not eclipse Liverpool's league title record ! He wants this more than another shot of scotch !!! Regardless if you love or hate him or support another team - Fergie is and will be a legend in international football - true football fans - doff your hats to a great manager and tactician - even the great Bill Shankly would have conceded to that fact !!!!! Imagine what he could do for Englands world cup hopes !!

  • MOO LOU - 2010-04-21 09:07

I am a liverpool fan but i give the guy full credit. The guy is good at his game

  • Harold - 2010-04-21 09:10

@Kube $. You obviously don't recall that United did win the world club champs 2 seasons back. Maybe like Wenger you "didn't see it". Wenger did not destroy Arsenal - he resurrected them from the boring route one (1 nil to the Arsenal) team. Anyway this is all crap as none of the other website carry the story.

  • Smiler - 2010-04-21 12:26

The day I believe The Sun newspaer will be the day I believe Julius 'Dilemma' will become the Minister of Racial Harmony and Love the Whities Brigade. Fergie is really getting under Chelsea's skin right now and as good a strategist he is on the filed he is a past master at the propogande stuff too.

  • Richard - 2010-04-21 13:06

He would have gone this year IF he had won the league as he is wanting to go out as the manager that beat LIVERPOOLS record and as it wont happen this year he will be with us for and 1, but that wont help either as City, Arsenal, Spur and Liverpool have all got younger teams and dont have to rely on Pensioners like (Giggs Scholes Neville etc) to win them the league Hahaha
